Bunclody is conveniently located between the Wicklow mountains and the Blackstairs range. Two of Ireland's major waymarked hiking trails start within three miles of Moss Cottage-the southern end of the Wicklow Way (see wicklowway.com) is at Clonegal while the northern end of the South Leinster Way is at Kildavin. We can easily arrange to pick you up or drop you off at either of these villages.

If you want freedom to roam on open mountains we can give you all the information that you'll need for long or short walks.

Alternatively, we can put our local knowledge and twenty five years of hiking experience at your disposal to provide guided walks in Wicklow, on the Blackstairs, by the Barrow river, or along the Wexford coast. If you would like to base yourself in Bunclody for a few days or a week, we can offer a varied programme of guided walks to suit all tastes.

Golf Image 1

Whatever direction you travel from Bunclody, you will very soon pass a golf club. A wide variety of both links and parkland courses will suit all handicaps. In south Wicklow, golf has been played at Coolattin since the early part of the century. It is an 18 hole, par 70 course. Mount Wolseley Golf and Country Club, near Tullow, is located in the ancestoral home of Frederick York Wolseley, who gave his name to the famous Wolseley cars. It is a parkland championship course designed by Christy O'Connor Jnr.

By contrast, the European Club is on traditional links terrain of 200 acres of rugged tumbling sand hills. Within easy reach are the courses in Enniscorthy, Courtown Harbour, and the famous Mount Juliet, designed by Jack Nicklaus, beside the river Nore.

Horse Riding 1

If horses are your interset, then you can find plenty to do in several riding establishments in the south-east of Ireland, within easy reach of Moss Cottage. Carrigbeg Stables at Bagenalstown offers an all weather outdoor arena, a cross country course, farm rides, and an indoor arena. They are open all year and have two qualified instructors.

If you would like to canter on the beach, this can be arranged at Curracloe House Equestrian Centre, eight miles north-east of Wexford Town. Alternatively, you can trek through the Wexford Sloblands, viewing the famous rare geese and teeming wildfowl which winter there. The facilities include a spacious enclosed arena, two grass arenas, and a 25-jump cross country course.

Cycling Image 1

Cycling is an ideal way to explore some of Ireland's hidden places. It provides a great sense of freedom to enjoy the sights, scents and sounds of the countryside. It can also be an ideal family activity. From Moss Cottage, you can find an endless variety of cycling routes, including small mountain roads, broad river valleys, and a picturesque coastline.

Cycling can be as flexible and spontaneous as you wish, allowing you to stop and explore whatever you happen to find along the way. It can be easy if you pick a route along the Slaney or Barrow rivers, or more demanding if you wish to cross the Blackstairs mountains or head for the Wicklow hills. We can suggest cycling routes to suit your taste and provide information about cycle hire.

JFK Arboretum

As you may have noticed, we have a very nice garden at Moss Cottage! Reluctantly, however, we have to admit that there are even nicer gardens in the hinterland of Bunclody. A beautiful day out might include a trip to the JFK Arboretum, near New Ross. Planted in memory of the former American President whose ancestors came from the area, the Arboretum covers 252 hectares with a vast collection of trees and shrubs.

On a smaller scale in the same area are the beautiful gardens of Kilmokea, containing 130 different species. Whether you are an avid gardener or simply appreciate natural works of art, you are sure to enjoy this three-part garden. Nearer your Bunclody base is the equally spectacular Altamount Gardens, developed on a 100-acre estate with beautiful mountain views, ornamental lake and ancient oak woods.

Irish National Heritage Park

The area around Bunclody lives in the shadow of its own history. Many visitor attractions have been developed to graphically illustrate this. For example, the Irish National Heritage Park contains 14 historical reconstructions depicting Ireland's heritage from the Stone Age to the arrival of the Normans in 1169.

The Normans first landed in Ireland at Bannow Bay in south Wexford and changed the course of Irish history. Their castles and fortifications are to be seen all over the area. One spectacular Norman castle is at Ferns-a shattered remnant now partly restored. Ferns has a large concentration of venerable ruins depicting several eras in the life span of this small village.

Enniscorthy is also an old Norman settlement on the banks of the Slaney. Its Norman castle is now a museum. From a later era, commemorating the 1798 rebellion, the National 1798 Visitor Centre gives a fascinating insight into the birth of modern democracy in Ireland, using multimedia and interactive technology.

Johnstown Castle is a fairy tale turreted castle dating from the 19th century. In addition to its beautiful gardens, it houses in its old stone farmyard one of the finest museums of rural and agricultural life in the country. In this area, you will never be bored. There are things to do and places to see every day of your stay.
